The Jaguar XK120 caused quite a splash in the newspapers of the day when it first broke cover at the 1948 Earls Court Show. Such was the demand for the new model that the early ash-framed and aluminium-panelled clad coachwork had to be re-engineered in more volume-production practical steel. Even so, and thanks to the XK twin overhead camshaft engine under the bonnet, the over 120mph 120 instantly became the world's fastest production motor car.
We understand from the vendor that, following acquisition of this 1953 Coventry-built classic, the XK120 SE was treated to a full rebuild from the ground up to a very high standard. We hear that the underside of the drophead coupe still looks superb, and the maroon paintwork and interior in biscuit tan hide are also impressive. The dashboard woodwork has been repolished and the instrumentation period correct for the model. The car has been rewired with a new loom installed, while a stainless steel exhaust has been fitted and the wheels renewed and shod with model correct Avon Turbo Speeds. We understand that loads of history and a Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirming manufacturing details are on file, whilst the current MOT will not need renewing until next February.
Throughout the boom and bust years, and subsequent recovery of the late 1990s and early 2000s, XK120s have held up well in terms of their value, always enjoying rare gilt-edged status. A 120 may not only be a wise punt, but a fun investment too.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
