With hindisght it seems astonishing that the G50 did not come into being before 1958. Although AMC had the 350cc 7R which ultimately would provide the basis for the G50, they were comitted to the development of the G45 twin and did not wish to divert attention from that project. However by the second half of the decade it was becoming apparent that the G45 was not going to succeed and in 1958 a 500cc machine derived from the 7R appeared. Sharing the same bore as the 7R at 78mm, the new machine had a stroke 90mm resulting in a displacement of 496cc.Following a period of intensive testing throughout 1958 production commenced in 1959 with the new engine housed in cycle parts of the same pattern as those used by the contemporary 7R with only the badge and colours distinguishing the G50 from the 7R. Developing a claimed 51bhp at 7,200rpm the new machine was immeidiately successfull.
Today G50's continue to win on the track in classic events supported by an industry that continues to refine and develop the model.
This example of a George Beale Lightweight G50 was built specially by George Beale for the current owner. It is fitted with a Quaife five speed gearbox, belt primary drive and Ceriani forks. An Amal Mk 2 Concentric provides the mixture for the 90mm stroke engine. Attractively presented in maroon and black it is described as being in race ready condition having recently brenefitted from a n engine rebuild. A comprehensive spares kit accompanies this two time Classic Scottish Champion.
