In 1954 the all-conquering XK120 gave way to the XK140. Visual changes included more substantial bumpers with over-riders, a one-piece radiator grille with fewer but thicker vertical slats, and a chrome strip that ran up the centre of the bonnet and continued down the boot lid, where it proudly incorporated a red shield with the words 'Winner Le Mans 1951-3' inscribed in gold. The mechanical specification comprised a number of fundamental upgrades including rack and pinion steering and the newcomer was offered in three body styles - Roadster, Drophead Coupe and Fixed Head Coupe. The XK140 was a quick car by any standards, and in SE trim it could accelerate to 60mph in under 9 seconds and rapidly on to a top speed approaching 125mph.
The XK140 Fixed Head Coupe being offered hails from 1955 and sports Black paintwork complemented by Red leather upholstery. '9012 PJ' was restored from a wrecked shell in 1989/1990 by classic racing specialist Mark Gibbon and purchased by the vendor in December 2002. It benefits from the following upgrades: a Getrag manual five-speed gearbox; disc front brakes and radial tyres. The vendor currently regards the Jaguar as having "excellent" bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and gearbox and is offering it complete with an MOT valid until May 2013.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
