Lot details Registration No: RDE 223 Chassis No: Unknown Mot Expiry: July 2005
An evolution of the Riley RMA sports saloon, the RME 1.5 litre was announced in late 1951. Built around the same fine-handling chassis as its predecessor, it benefited from the adoption of Girling hydraulic drum brakes, a hypoid-bevel back axle and enlarged rear windscreen. A handsome design capable of some 80mph, its traditional ash-framed bodywork and well-appointed interior placed it a cut above many rivals. Unfortunately, so did a purchase price which had risen to over £850 (excluding purchase tax) by the time production ceased in 1955. As a result, a mere 3,446 RMEs are thought to have been made.
Finished in black with maroon leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as needing attention to its lights and interior trim but otherwise being in good condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to have been dry stored by its previous keeper and kept in a garage during the current ownership, recent work has apparently included some engine fettling together with a brake overhaul during which the "wheel cylinders and master cylinder were fully restored". Boasting the further advantages of "updated indicator lights" and "full documentation", RDE 223 is believed to have covered just 70,200 miles from new. Registered with the Riley Club, it is offered for sale with historic class (free) road tax until 30th June 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
