Lot details
Registration No: DGN 253
Chassis No: 12798
Mot Expiry: Nov 2009

A true motoring pioneer, Frederick Lanchester was responsible for launching Britain's very first petrol-driven four-wheeler in 1895. Experimenting with mid-engined layouts just six years later, his 40hp car of 1919 was a more than credible rival to Rolls-Royce's 40/50hp Silver Ghost. However, the no compromise nature of Lanchester designs augured badly for its financial future and in 1930 the company was amalgamated into the BSA group (parent to Daimler since 1910). Although, sometimes dismissed as badge-engineered Daimlers, 1930s Lanchesters retained their own sense of character and benefited - alongside their siblings - from an impressive engineering pool that included such luminaries as Laurence Pomeroy. Revised for 1936, the Lanchester Eighteen was based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a smooth 2565cc OHV four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed pre-selector transmission, the model was reputedly capable of over 70mph. Refined and relaxing to drive, it continued the marque tradition of quality with innovation.

H&H are indebted to the vendor for the following account: "The Martin Walter bodied Wingham Cabriolet Lanchester could be described as an all-weather tourer. It has wind-up windows and a fully lined dark blue vinyl hood which compliments the Royal Blue body colour. The interior retains its original dark navy leather upholstery which is in good condition and has the patina of age which is impossible to achieve with new trim. The dark blue Wilton carpets and polished woodwork are in excellent condition and all the electrics and instruments are functioning. Flashing indicators have been discretely added for safety reasons but the original semaphores are in working order although currently disconnected. The car has been used sparingly in recent years and has been part of a private museum collection. It was acquired by the Cooke Group (well known restorers of Bullnose Morris cars) during the early 1990s and had a lot of refurbishment in their workshops including repainting of the chassis and detailing of the engine bay. The Cabriolet's early history is unknown but according to the buff logbook it spent most of its time in Scotland after World War Two until at least the 1970s. The general condition indicates that the mileage shown of 36,000 might possibly be correct (however, this figure is not warranted). A maintenance handbook is included. The quality of the build is evident throughout the car and it is presented with a recently renewed MOT certificate".
