ONE DRIVER & 39,000 MILES FROM NEW
Introduced at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth - the first Blue Oval product to wear a Cosworth badge - was the brainchild of Stuart Turner and his team. Conceived as a means of homologating the Sierra for Group A Touring Car Racing, the newcomer's three-door monocoque bodyshell was aerodynamically enhanced via a deep front air dam, side skirts and `whale tail' rear spoiler. Powered by a Cosworth-designed 2-litre DOHC 16-valve turbo engine allied to Borg Warner T5 manual transmission, the rear-wheel drive hatchback was credited with developing some 204bhp and 205lbft. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and 149.5mph in standard tune, total production of the first generation RS Cosworth is thought to have amounted to just 5,542 cars.
The interesting right-hand drive 1986 RS Cosworth being sold has had just one driver from new - a now retired Ford engineer who was part of the team that developed both this model and the closely related, World Touring Car Championship-winning, RS500. It was initially his Ford lease car and was then purchased by him in June 1989 and has covered a warranted 39,000 miles from new. The model was available in just three colours - Black, White and Moonstone Metallic Blue - and `D775 SVW' is finished in the latter, mated to the standard Grey cloth interior. Subtle modifications to the car include: Sierra 4x4 front knuckle joints and track control arms à la Sapphire Cosworth, and specially selected longer front springs that result in a level rather than nose-down attitude, while Cosworth Engineering of Northampton were responsible for installing an uprated -31 wastegate actuator and replacement ECU chip which raised engine output to 275bhp. Over time a new fuel tank has been fitted and the cam belt changed 100 miles ago - the old tank, suspension parts, ECU and an extra spare wheel/tyre are part of the lot. MOT'd into April 2012 and riding on a fresh set of Toyo Proxes tyres, this Sierra provides a rare opportunity for the RS Cosworth's many aficionados.
