Lot details Registration No: JBL717D Chassis No: IB941DN Mot Expiry: Mar 2007
Launched in 1963, the Jaguar S-type was marketed as more of an 'executive' car than its MKII sibling. Boasting notably superior ride and handling characteristics thanks to the adoption of independent rear suspension (cribbed from the MKX / E-type), it also enjoyed a more spacious interior complete with dashboard-mounted walnut centre console. Visually distinguished by its elongated boot, flatter roofline and hooded headlamps, the model was powered by a choice of 3.4 litre (210bhp) or 3.8 litre (220bhp) DOHC straight-six engines allied to either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Maintaining the Coventry manufacturer's reputation for speed, luxury and mechanical refinement, the S-type remained in production until 1968 by which time approximately 25,000 had been sold (10,000 3.4s Vs 15,000 3.8s).
Finished in Carmen Red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its 3442cc engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly first registered to the actor and impresario Robert Morley, 'JBL 717D' has been in the current ownership since November 2001 (when it was purchased via another one of our Buxton auctions). Stated by the seller to have covered a "warranted 59,600 miles from new" and to be "one of the finest S-types available", the saloon is further understood to retain its "original tools and manuals" and to benefit from an "excellent history file". Worthy of detailed inspection, this special Jaguar is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until March 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
