Lot details Registration No: MYW 77 Chassis No: 4393 63985/22381 Mot Expiry: July 2008
Although, instantly recognisable as a T-series model thanks to its perpendicular radiator shell, flowing wings and rear-mounted spare wheel, the TD broke important new ground for the Abingdon marque. The first MG sportscar to feature either independent double-wishbone front suspension or rack and pinion steering, the newcomer also boasted a hypoid-bevel back axle, hidden scuttle reinforcement hoop (save for the first few cars) and twin leading-shoe front brakes. Powered by the proven 1250cc XPAG engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 82mph and 26mpg. Riding on fifteen-inch steel wheels as standard, the TD also sported a mirror-image dashboard (thus facilitating either LHD or RHD production) and chrome-plated bumpers. A great success story, the vast majority of the 29,665 cars produced were sold overseas.
Finished in black with tan leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork, paintwork), "very good" (interior trim, chassis) or "excellent" (wheels / tyres) condition. Beginning life as an export model, chassis TD22381 was reportedly "bought new by Captain David Baber". First UK registered upon its return in 1952, the MG is said to have entered the current ownership some eighteen months ago. Treated to "an interior re-trim and hood during the mid 1990s", past work is also understood to have included an engine overhaul ("new piston rings and valves etc"). While 2006 apparently saw the TD benefit from "a replacement front bumper, resprayed front wings, fresh door hinges and new wire wheels / hubs". Stated to have covered "only 500 miles between the last two MOTs", 'MYW 77' is offered for sale with "lots of invoices", MOT certificate valid until July 2008 and historic class (free) road tax valid until November 30th 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
