Introduced in 1926, the Chrysler Imperial Model E-80 was intended to rival the Cadillac Model 314 and Packard 236 Eight. Styled in-house by Oliver A Clark, it could be had in Roadster, Coupe, Sedan or Limousine guises (though, all shared the same distinctive rounded radiator shell and scalloped bonnet). Based around a massive ladder frame chassis with seven cross-members, all round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and hydraulic drum brakes, it was powered by a rather unprepossessing looking sidevalve 289ci straight-six. However, the provision of seven main bearings, Lynite aluminium pistons, Riccardo squish-shaped combustion chambers and a Lanchester vibration damper allowed the unit to develop some 92hp and 192lbft of torque. Mated to three-speed manual transmission, this resulted in an 80mph top speed (hence the model designation) and effortless high speed cruising. By way of demonstration, dealer Floyd Clymer drove a stock E-80 Roadster from Kansas City to Denver, Colorado in June 1926 at an average speed of 51.8mph (702 miles, 13 hours 56 minutes). Not to be outdone, LB Miller and JE Weiler used an E-80 Sedan to set a new two-way Trans America record the following year at an average speed of 40mph (6,721 miles, 167 hours 59 minutes).
Finished in two-tone beige over black with brown upholstery, this particular example has been part of the collection since 1995. An older restoration, it still carries a discreet plaque for 'Wilkinson & Sharp, Fine Restoring, Feasterville, PA'. Benefiting from Tiltray Guide headlamps, Buffalo centre-lock wire wheels, a rumble seat and Chrysler signature dashboard plate, the presence of a high compression red cylinder head may be indicative of later L-80 112hp powerplant.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
