1964 Triumph TR6 Trophy

Lot details
Registration No: ONW479B
Frame No: TR6RDU10982
Engine No: TR6RDU10982
cc: 650
MOT Expiry Date: April 2011

International Six Days Trial successes in the late 1940's prompted Triumph to adopt the "Trophy" name for their off-road-styled twins, at first for the 500cc TR5 and then for the 650cc TR6, introduced for 1956.The bigger Trophy retained its sporting character, with high piped examples continuing to be offered in some export markets alongside the TR6R which was more of a roadster, in effect a single carburettor T120 Bonneville. More tractable than the Bonnie and more economical too, the Trophy gave little away in terms of outright performance, its standing quarter mile time and top speed being within a whisker of its twin-carb sibling's and was considerably easier to keep "in tune". The Trophy continued in this form when Triumphs 650cc twins changed to unit construction in October 1962. Styling and mechanical updates coincided with the Bonnie's from then onwards.

This superb matching-numbers TR6 Trophy was despatched new to Johnson motors, USA-Triumphs official west coast distributor, based in Pasadena, California on the 12th May 1964. The machine was repatriated 38 years later when it was shipped back to the UK in 2002. It was fully restored following its return to the UK by a preceding owner and has subsequently covered some 2700mls or so "fine weather miles only". Sensibly updated with electronic ignition and new coil, this beautiful red and silver example of one of Meriden's finest products is described as being in excellent condition in all respects and has recently benefited from a new battery. It is offered with a dating certificate and Swansea V5C document and an MOT certificate valid until the 13th April 2011.
