Lot details Registration No: 728 HUW Chassis No: Z55C206117M Mot Expiry: Sept 2009
Ford's Zodiac/Zephyr series was a sophisticated saloon when it appeared in 1953, being one of the first cars to use MacPherson strut front suspension, now almost universal. It grew bigger, becoming the Mk2 in 1956. The MkIII - with bold new transatlantic-inspired styling, by Canadian Roy Brown - appeared in 1962 and stayed in production until 1964, making this a late car. More than 105,000 were built but estate versions were much rarer, being subcontracted by Ford to outside coachbuilders, in this case Abbotts of Farnham, which performed similar conversions on Vauxhalls and Jaguars in period.
Evoking memories of the classic BBC TV serial 'Z Cars', which used MkIII Zephyrs, as did the real-life police, this Zephyr 6 has the smooth 2553cc straight six engine, coupled to a four-speed 'box with column change, an improvement on the MkII's tricky three-speeder. Bench seats front and rear provide seating for six. The coachwork remains in "very good" condition, with "excellent" chrome, says the vendor, having been cared for, and used sparingly, only covering just over 32,000 miles since new. The interior trim is: "Very good and well cared-for". It has just returned from Holland with Dutch papers, but the DVLA has confirmed that the car can keep its original number 728 HUW. The vendor adds that it: "Runs very well indeed", with electrical equipment "all working well". It comes with original logbook, handbook, workshop manual, and lots of useful spares in the back. A great car for the next Goodwood!
PLEASE NOTE: This car is believed but not warranted to have covered 32,000 miles since new.
PLEASE NOTE 2: This vehicle does not have a current V5C Registration Document, although paperwork on file from the DVLA indicates that UK registration paperwork can be applied for.
