1930 Singer Junior Coupe

Lot details
Registration No: HY 1335
Chassis No: 30704
Mot Expiry: None

Introduced at the 1926 Motor Show, the Singer Junior was based around a neat channel section chassis equipped with leaf-sprung suspension and drum brakes (fitted to all four wheels from 1928). A conventional `light car' design in many respects, the newcomer was distinguished by its 848cc four-cylinder engine. A highly advanced unit featuring a two-bearing crankshaft, detachable cylinder head and overhead camshaft to operate its valve gear, the compact powerplant developed a creditable 16.5hp @ 3,250rpm and went on to form the basis of an engine dynasty that stretched into the 1950s. Priced at £140 10s and only available as a three-door Four-Seater Tourer to begin with, the model soon acquired a whole host of siblings including: a Two-Seater Tourer, Sunshine Saloon, Coachbuilt Saloon, Fabric Saloon, 2+2 Sportsman's Coupe and boat-tailed Porlock Sports. Capable of 45 - 50mph, the Junior proved a sales sensation with post-1927 production averaging over 6,000 cars per year. Indeed, so popular was its 8hp range that Singer became England's third largest manufacturer of passenger cars in 1928. However, some eighty years on survivors are comparatively few and far between.

An older restoration this particular example has been off the road for several years. Dry stored and periodically turned over, the recent addition of a new battery and fresh fuel allowed the Singer to burst into life once more. Reportedly "starting readily, running well and maintaining good oil pressure", we are further informed that "the clutch and brakes were shown to be working on a short test run". However, the fuel tank is apparently showing "evidence of a leak on a soldered joint", while "the radiator is weeping from a small hole towards its base which may have resulted from clumsy use of the starting handle". In need of recommissioning but seeming to be basically sound, this appealing Junior Coupe is offered for sale with "owners' handbook, maintenance / service booklets and some evidence of past show attendance".

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
