Arguably the most radical 'Vette in two decades, the fourth generation or C4 model was introduced in March 1983. Some twenty-four per cent more aerodynamically efficient than its predecessor, it boasted a drag coefficient of 0.34. Built around a C-section beam reinforced monocoque equipped with composite transverse-leaf independent suspension and rack and pinion steering, its handling was benchmarked against the likes of the Porsche 928. Subject to a programme of continual revision, it gained a convertible version in 1986 (the first open Corvette for eleven years), a new 300bhp / 330lbft LT1 350ci (5.7 litre) V8 engine in 1992 and a revised dashboard in 1994 together with a host of incremental styling changes. Given the honour of acting as Pace Car to the world-famous Indianapolis 500 Race in 1986 and 1995, Chevrolet marked the latter occasion by producing a limited edition run of 527 Indy Pace Corvette Convertibles. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in sub six seconds and over 160mph, these mechanically standard but highly coloured projectiles were finished in purple over white with a red noseband and featured specially embroidered leather seats.
Part of the collection since 1995, this particular example was bought on the understanding that it was one of twenty-six cars actually assigned to the track for use during the 79th Indianapolis 500 held on May 28th 1995. Reputed to be car number 50, its impressive specification includes: ABS brakes, four-speed automatic transmission, traction control, seventeen-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, electric windows and driver / passenger airbags etc. Showing just 4,142 miles on its digital odometer, it is accompanied by a GM 'Certificate of Origin for a Vehicle'.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be VAT payable on the hammer price achieved by this lot, unless purchased by a Dutch National in which case the remnants of 'luxury tax' will be payable as well.
