Lot details Registration No: LOH884F Chassis No: IB59508DN Mot Expiry: June 10
Launched in 1963, the Jaguar S-type was placed further up market than its MKII sibling, thanks to the adoption of independent rear suspension borrowed from the MkX and E-type. This gave it notably superior ride and handling characteristics and allowed a more spacious interior, as luxurious as the MKII's but this time with dashboard-mounted walnut centre console. Visually distinguished by its elongated tail, flatter roofline and hooded headlamps, the model was powered by a choice of 3.4 litre (210bhp) or 3.8 litre (220bhp) DOHC straight-six engines allied to either four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Maintaining the Coventry manufacturer's reputation for speed, luxury and mechanical refinement, the S-type remained in production until 1968 by which time approximately 25,000 had been sold -10,000 3.4s and 15,000 3.8s.
Finished in metallic grey with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, interior trim and bodywork (though, he notes that there are "a few bubbles on the front wing / crow's feet"). The paintwork is understood to be "good save for one or two small marks", while the electrical equipment is apparently "all working apart from the right-hand fuel sender". Not long after appearing on Channel Five's `Fifth Gear' programme in 2002, `LOH 884F' underwent a colour change as part of an extensive restoration. Then the engine was overhauled, the overdrive unit replaced, the interior refurbished with new headlining, carpets and folding sunroof, and the steering upgraded using a power-assisted rack. Since entering the current ownership via our November 2007 auction, the saloon has been treated to a stainless-steel exhaust, replacement heated rear windscreen, new rear springs / dampers and, just before this sale, a new set of MWS wire wheels. This well-specified S-type is accompanied by paperwork from the late 1980s, "bills for thousands since 2002", Fifth Gear programme CD, replacement fuel gauge sender unit, spare wire wheel and MOT certificate valid until June 2010. "It is a fabulous touring/sports car and with the full-length sunroof gives you open-top motoring with no leaks or draughts" says the vendor.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
