1966 Rover P5 3 Litre MK III Saloon

Sold for £2,362

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: DET327D
Chassis No: 79500094A
Mot Expiry: April 2009

Introduced in 1958, the P5 3 litre saloon was Rover's first monocoque design. Styled by David Bache, the newcomer's handsome lines and well-appointed interior helped make it a favourite among luxury car buyers. Equipped with independent torsion-bar front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, the model was powered by a torquey 2995cc straight-six engine mated to a four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox (though, automatic transmission was soon optional). Reputedly capable of over 100mph, the P5 was subject to a continual development programme gaining disc front brakes in 1960 and a coupe derivative some two years later. Arriving in 1965, the updated MkIII version was visually distinguished by a subtler front grille and full length chrome side mouldings. Utilising the same underpinnings and sheetmetal as its MkII predecessor but boasting more horsepower (134bhp), the newcomer offered a similarly cosseting driving experience. Benefiting from the adoption of reclining front seats and a more sculpted rear bench, the model was again available in saloon or coupe guises (the latter sporting a lower roofline).

Dating from 1966 this MkIII Saloon is finished in Sage Green with a complementing green leather interior. Understood to have been purchased by a Mr. Reginald Peek of Chesterfield when 4 years old, it was to remain in his ownership for 37 years, covering just 33,000 miles. Today, it is believed to have covered a total of 45,000 miles. Stated by the owner to be in remarkable original time-warp condition it comes with an extensive history file, all owner's manuals, a full tool tray including original touch-up paint, Swansea V5C and MOT certificate expiring April 2009.

PLEASE NOTE: This car is a saloon and not a coupe as incorrectly titled in the printed auction catalogue. We apologise for any confusion.
