Ariel had introduced a pair of 500cc twins in 1948. Designed by Val Page both machines displaced 499cc and shared cycle parts with the single cylinder range. Typed the KG de luxe and the KH Red Hunter, which had a slightly higher state of tune, they quickly established themselves in a competitive market. However, by the early fifties it was apparent that Ariel required a larger displacement twin to compete with the 650cc models offered by their rivals. Rather than increase the capacity of the existing Page designed 500 the company chose to use the A10 Golden Flash engine produced by their parent company, BSA, installed in a chassis of their own design with pivoted fork rear suspension. A Burman gearbox was employed. Released for the 1954 season, the "Huntmaster" was well received by both the press and public. The finish was considered to be better than that of its BSA cousin and the machine was described as being endowed with "First class steering and braking" when tested by "The Motor Cycle" who also commented favorably on its 80mph cruising potential. During 1958 a variant of the Huntsmaster was produced for the US market. Called the Cyclone the new model featured light, chrome mudguards and high export handlebars. The engine employed a hotter camshaft and higher than standard compression pistons. Power output was between 35 bhp and 40 bhp depending which of the piston sets was used. Various production figures have been cited for the Cyclone, however 180 seems to be the generally excepted total making the Cyclone a rare beast both in its intended market and its country of origin.
The example offered was purchased by the vendor in need of restoration, which was completed early in 2011. The engine was rebuilt with new mains bearings, little ends, pistons and valves being fitted and the transmission was checked. The frame has been powder coated and the black and red paintwork renewed. The electrical system has been renewed. This extremely rare machine, which has resided in the UK all of its life is offered with a Swansea V5C.
