The success of the Honda VFR750/800 sports tourer prompted a number of manufacturers to produce machines aimed at the same market sector. The VFR achieved a fine balance between, practicality, performance and handling; proving to be equally adept at dealing with track days or a blast across Europe which rival manufacturers sought to emulate with their own products. With the ST series, Ducati came nearer than most to producing a machine capable of toppling the VFR from its position as king of the sports tourers. The ST4s utilised a version of the desmoquattro four valves, liquid cooled vee twin that had first been seen in the 996 sports bike. In the ST4s application the 996cc engine utilised revised cylinder heads with slightly smaller inlets when compared to those used in the sports bike application. The engine was housed in a steel trellis frame equipped with a full fairing and dual seat, Showa front forks and an Ohlins rear damper. The riding position was less radical than that offered by the sports bikes in the range and the machine was equipped with such useful extras as an auxiliary power point, a centre stand as standard and a full luggage set. When tested the new model proved to be nearly as quick as the sporting 996 and considerably more practical.
This example, finished in metallic grey, was purchased new by the vendor in 2002. He used the machine to attend two rallies, recording approximately 1,500 miles, before laying the machine up. It is offered in lovely condition and accompanied by its luggage, three sets of keys, a cover, owner's handbooks, a tank cover and a Swansea V5C.
