Having first broken cover competing at Le Mans in the 1951 24-hours classic, eventually the very aerodynamic for its day MGA was mass-produced at the MG Car Company's Abingdon works for the marque's worldwide clientele. So popular did the new model become that, even in the first year of MGA 1500 production, over 13,000 of them were snapped up in 1955 - while, from 1956 onwards, a more UK weather friendly closed fixed head coupe version joined the open car in the MG catalogue.
A pushrod 1598cc powered version soon followed and, finally, a 1622cc engined MkII, again in open or closed form. By the time that the last MGA MkII 1622 had come off the line in mid-1962, an impressive total of 101,081 MGAs had been manufactured.
Offered here is what the entrant describes as a fabulously original MGA, not a glossy rebuild, but a beautifully patinated example. He tells us that the 1960-built and righthand drive fixed head has had six previous owners and has history on file back to 1973.
The white painted bodywork and red-trimmed interior are both described as excellent, and the 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission are said to be in A1 order. The 120,588 miles displayed when entered for the sale is believed to be the genuine total for this very English classic. Even though now a Rover Group brand, the MG is still the UK's most well known make of sportscar.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
