Pushbike makers Ariel made their first motorcycles in Selly Oak, Birmingham, around the turn of the century. By the early 1930s, the Midland marque were employing such influential figures as Edward Turner, Val Page and Bert Hopwood, three of the UK industry's greatest designers. Having been saved by Jack Sangster in the early 1930s, Ariel were sold to BSA in 1944.
This mighty Ariel Square Four being auctioned here was made in 1954 and was in receipt of a total restoration in 1990 and has covered 22,000 miles since. The vendor assures that frame, 1000cc engine and gearbox a well as the original registration are all still present and correct. The current condition of frame and suspension is said to be OK, black paint, brightwork and cycle parts good, and the overhead valve four reportedly in good order.
Transmission and electrics are claimed to be OK too. On file are not only an old-style green logbook but also an uninterrupted run of former MOT test certificates from 1990 to 2004. The tax disc is valid until February.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
