Cyclemasters, which enabled pedal-cycles to be simply and cheaply motorised, were produced from a Dutch design by EMI of Hayes, Middlesex, from 1950 to 1957. Offered here is a 25cc version which was manufactured in 1951, when the 0.5bhp engine and wheel unit would have cost a not inconsiderable £25 - the equivalent of 4-5 weeks wages in those days! Thus power-assisted, a Cyclemaster equipped bicycle would have a 15-20mph top speed.
This particular Cyclemaster has been fitted to a GPO cycle, which, wisely as a road safety tweak, has been fitted with a front hub brake. Having been put back into use in 1991, Cyclemaster in black and bike in red have been ridden on many Vintage Cyclemotor Runs of up to 50 miles.
Requiring an MOT test certificate and a tax disc, just like a traditional motorcycle, a powered bicycle like this one can be insured in the same way as any other collector bike. Cyclemasters are certainly great fun to exercise and, thanks to a strong following among enthusiasts for such things, their recent auction performances indicate that they are an appreciating transport collectible.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
