1925 Crossley 15/30 Three Door Open Tourer

Sold for £5,850

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: SV 7690
Chassis No: 29408
Mot Expiry: Jan 2005

Crossley was famous for making engines before the name appeared on their own automobiles, the company the first in Britain to make a 4-stroke internal combustion engine employing the Otto principal. From 1904, Crossley became a major manufacturer in Manchester, where, as Crossley Motors Limited, they continued to be an important car maker from 1910 until 1937.
The Crossley offered here was designated a 15/30 when it left the Gorton factory in 1925 bound for Australia. The 15/30 was an export version of the Model 14 with slightly different exhaust and wheels, and a more rugged block for the 2100cc 4-cylinder motor and 3-speed gearbox.
Whilst in Australia, chassis number 29408 was bodied in aluminium over an ash frame as a 3-door 4-seater tourer with folding windscreen. Re-imported in 1992 and restored over the next few years, the V5 shows the current registration dates from April 1999. Said to be mechanically and bodily OK, the paintwork is reportedly good, the leather average and the hood renewed. Reversible artillery wheels are shod with standard 5.25 x 21 tyres, not beaded-edge tyres as fitted to British Crossleys of this period.
Foot-operated brakes on all four wheels and a transmission handbrake make the car perfectly usable in traffic. We understand that the magneto was overhauled and the engine given a de-coke in 2001.Registered with the Owners Club, this charming pre-war Crossley has recently attended many rallies and been a regular class winner at shows.
