Lot details
Registration No: PP 5161
Chassis No: 60916
Mot Expiry: None

Launched at the 1921 Paris Salon but not entering production until May the following year, the Type C was Citroen's first small car. Unusually well proportioned for a model of its type, it was built around a ladder frame chassis equipped with quarter elliptic leaf-springs and rear wheel brakes (though there was a supplementary drum on the transmission). Powered by an 856cc sidevalve four-cylinder engine that developed some 11bhp @ 2,100rpm (but was fiscally rated by the French authorities at 5CV), it was a willing if not exactly quick performer. Evolving through C2 and C3 guises (the latter boasting a stretched wheelbase and larger wheels), the Type C was initially available solely as a two-seater Torpedo tourer. However, the addition of the famous 'Trefle' tourer (so called because of its one-behind-two seating arrangement) and a cabriolet helped broaden its appeal significantly. Thus, by the time production ceased in 1926, some 88,000 units had been manufactured. Sadly discontinued in favour of its larger, higher profit-margin siblings, the Type C was notable for its advertising campaign (conceived by the Wallace & Draegar agency) which was among the first to specifically target women drivers.
Partially restored, this particular example is still in need of extensive refurbishment. Thought to be substantially complete mechanically, it comes with various parts including a windscreen, headlamps and a number of back axle components. Believed to have had a Nazi symbol stamped into its chassis during WW2 to facilitate French / German border crossings en route to a weekly market, it is currently fitted with a C5B 903cc four-cylinder engine by known Citroen proprietary engine supplier Ruby. Lacking upholstery, trim and body fittings, it should nevertheless prove a fairly straightforward project and is offered for sale with V5 registration document.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is a non runner.
