Created by Mini racer turned car tuner Ken Costello, the first Rover V8-engined MGB appeared in 1970. Suitably impressed, MG began work on an 'official' version the following year. Introduced in August 1973, the resultant MGB GT V8 looked disarmingly standard. Borrowing its four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox and rear-end transmission from the six-cylinder MGC (but doing without that model's power bulge in the bonnet thanks to the use of a special low-rise inlet manifold), it used the same monocoque bodyshell and suspension layout as the four-cylinder MGB, their respective powerplants being near identical in weight. Thus, although it necessitated a modified bulkhead, raised ride height, bespoke gear ratios and upgraded front disc brakes, the installation of the all-alloy 3528cc Rover V8 proved relatively straightforward. Credited with 137bhp (and a stonking 193lbft of torque at only 2900rpm), the Buick-derived unit imbued the MGB with a hitherto unknown level of performance. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 125mph, the MGB GT V8 was favourably received by the contemporary motoring press - though a mere 2591 were made, as the model remained in production for only three years.
Finished in Teal Blue with orange cloth upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Stated to have had just four owners from new and to have belonged to the last two of these for the past thirty-two years, the MG is further understood to have covered a little over 60,000 miles (a figure partially substantiated by the twenty-one old MOT certificates on file). Covering 2,000 odd miles during the last sixteen years, the GT is reportedly only coming to market due to the passing of its fourth keeper. Riding on correct-type composite alloy wheels and sporting a full-length Webasto sunroof, the V8 is deemed by the seller to be "stunning both inside and out". This rare and desirable MG is supplied with V5C Registration Document, plus old-style log book, owner's manual, parts catalogue, various bills / invoices and MOT certificate valid until August 2011.
