"Seldom in Cadillac history has there been an announcement as significant as the message you are now reading. For this is the announcement that introduces the magnificent new 1958 Cadillac - the finest and most advanced motor car ever to bear the celebrated Cadillac name. Certainly one glance at its extraordinary grace and symmetry will tell you instantly that this is motordom's masterpiece in styling. Its new sweep and stature, its remarkable new fender design, its dazzling new grille and four-headlamp system, and its tasteful use of chrome and colour . . . all mark it as a singularly beautiful and majestic automotive creation" (Cadillac advertisement,1958)
Introduced in 1949 as part of the Cadillac Series 62 model range, the De Ville cars (two-door 'Coupe' or four-door 'Sedan') gained their own product codes for 1958. Built around a cruciform-braced chassis featuring all-round coil-sprung suspension and servo-assisted drum brakes, their 365ci (6.0litre), OHV V8 engine produced a claimed 300bhp. Equipped with power assisted steering and four-speed Hydra-matic automatic transmission as standard, the duo also came with electric windows and an adjustable front bench seat. Able to accommodate six in comfort, the Coupe De Ville sat on a 129.5-inch wheelbase and cost some $5,231 (without options).
Finished in ivory with black leather / ivory cloth upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "very good" condition with regard to its 390ci (6.4litre) engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork and wheels / tyres (while, he considers the paintwork to be "good"). Reportedly "owned by the famous Rock Hudson" forming a part of "his household until the late 1960s", the Cadillac was "brought over to the UK in the late 1980s". As well as being featured "in the American Classic Magazine, on Radio 2 and as part of a show at the Royal Theatre, Nottingham", 'BSV 958' is also said to have "won many prestigious awards and trophies during the 1990s". Apparently "professionally sandblasted, resprayed, rechromed and replated throughout only three years ago", this imposing Cadillac is reluctantly offered for sale due to a loss of storage space.
