Founded by two Germans, Siegfried Beltman and Maurice Schultze, Triumph began motorcycle manufacturing in 1902, employing a Belgian Minerva engine, though their sales were such that the Coventry firm was soon producing its own power units. An all-Triumph 3½ hp model first appeared in 1907 with a 453cc engine, although this was steadily refined through the 476cc version of 1908 to the 1910 499c model.
When millionaire businessman Jack Sangster acquired the motorcycle manufacturing part of Triumph, the Ariel owner put engineer Edward Turner in charge and it was Turner who designed the marque’s world famous overhead valve, parallel twin of 498cc capacity which powered the 1937 Triumph Twin, the basis of so many Triumph machines well into the 1980s.
Another milestone Triumph, however, was the 35W, which was put into service with the British Forces in 1939, around the time when this example is reckoned to have been made. 35W production was all to military specification until the 350cc mechanical war horse was ‘civilianised’ in 1946. According to the vendor, this ex-WD, which comes with current V5 registration document, has been in receipt of some recent expenditure.
