Postwar, whilst R-R aero engine production resumed at Derby, all cars were made at Crewe. Rolls-Royce Motors was floated in 1971 to concentrate on making motor cars. Vickers acquired those assets in 1980, whilst recently the Germans carved up the spoils, so that VW-owned Bentleys continue to be made just over the hills in Cheshire, while BMW-Rollers are trickling off the new line at a green field site in Sussex.
The R-R Silver Shadow II was replaced by the Silver Spirit from 1980, with the same 6750cc 8-cylinder engine, though using a longer and wider bodyshell to provide occupants greater window area to view the nasty outside as well as more room inside.
Offered here is a Silver Spirit, which, says the entrant, first left the Crewe works in 1982. Claimed to be a superb early and very original example with graphite grey paint and stone leather seats all still untouched, the luxurious status symbol has the benefit of leather trimmed headlining and lambswool over-rugs. We are told that there have been only two previous keepers, all the tools in the factory-supplied tool kit are present and correct, and the documents file includes service history from new.
The 107,000 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for this auction is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage for the car from new, whilst the current MOT will not require renewal until next April.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
