One of the first new cars to emerge onto the post-WW2 British market, the Riley RMA appeared in late 1945. Stylistically indebted to the marque's 1930s 'Continental' models its handsome four-door bodywork (complete with fabric covered roof) was supported by an ash frame. Featuring independent torsion-bar front suspension, rack and pinion steering and hydro-mechanical drum brakes, the RMA's freshly designed chassis was deservedly praised by the contemporary press for its supple ride and poised handling. Powered by a gutsy 'twin-cam' 1496cc four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the sports saloon was reputedly capable of 81mph. Well-appointed, its welcoming cabin boasted leather upholstery and polished wood trim. A strong seller despite its £709 18s 4d asking price, some 10,504 RMAs are thought to have left the factory between 1945 and 1952.
Finished in green with a black roof and brown leather / tan cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described as being in "average" (paintwork), "generally good" (bodywork), "good" (engine, gearbox, wheels / tyres) or "very good / sound" (chassis) condition. Reportedly "bought by the vendor's father in July 1982" as a restoration project, 'JFJ 513' was subsequently treated to a "body-off rebuild". Said to have been carried out to a "good workmanlike standard", the rejuvenation included much of the wooden framing being replaced as well as a respray, rewiring, new roof covering, headlining, carpets, partially re-trimmed seats (cloth inserts) and dashboard refurbishment. Returned to the road in the early 1990s, recent work has seen the RMA benefit from "lots of new parts, re-chroming and a cylinder head gasket change". Originally registered in Exeter (or so its 'JFJ' number plate would indicate), this elegant yet practical Riley is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until May 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until April 2007.
