This J & A Carter April 1948 made Invalid car, a three-wheeler ingeniously engineered for its day, is believed to have been first owned by a Lord Trallfall. With offices at 125-129 Great Portland Street in London`s West End, Carter and Co's wares came highly recommended, being Royal Warrant holders - "By Appointment to the Late King George V" no less!
First registered in April 1948, the Carter is 36 volts electric powered. With battery fully charged, it could propel one occupant up to 40 miles in virtual silence before lengthy recharging became necessary. Carter's infirm clients - who at £235 would have to be pretty wealthy, too, unless as war disabled they qualified for Ministry of Health subsidy - were impressed by the ability to slow right down to a crawl.
Such now extremely unusual devices rarely come onto the market, most survivors having become long-term residents in well stocked collections. From the last tax disc, dated 1950, this MPD 684 has almost certainly not seen little action since. If made roadworthy again, the registration might possibly be retrievable and transferable.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
