OFFERED FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, the 928 was conceived (and priced) as the flagship of the Porsche range. A luxurious GT, it was styled in-house by American Tony Lapine as a replacement for the ageing, compromised 911. Ultimately, it failed to usurp its tail-heavy sibling despite becoming the only sports car ever to win the European Car of the Year title in 1978. Built around a galvanised steel monocoque, it made extensive use of aluminium for its wheels, doors, bonnet, transaxle housing, front suspension wishbones, rear suspension uprights, upper links and main crossmember. This practice not only saved weight but also contributed to the car's near perfect 49:51 weight distribution. Blessed with excellent handling and strong roadholding thanks to its award-winning its award-winning `Weissach' passive-steer rear suspension, the 928 was able to make the most of the 240bhp and 257lb ft of torque provided by its all alloy 4.5-litre V8 engine. Available with either manual or automatic transaxle, the 928 was subject to a programme of continual upgrades. The 928S introduced in 1979 gave way to the S2 some three years later. Inheriting the 928S's enlarged 4664cc unit, the S2 added electronic ignition, a 10.4 :1 compression ratio and Bosch LH Jetronic fuel injection to boost outputs to 310bhp and 295lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of 160mph and 0-60mph in a little over six seconds, the S2 came with standard fit ABS disc brakes.
Finished in silver metallic with black / beige upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, bodywork, paintwork), "average" (interior trim, electrical equipment) or "working" (automatic gearbox) condition. He goes on to say: "There has been no accident damage to the best of my knowledge. The car was prudently owned by a former Porsche main dealer on the Isle of Man and used sparingly. It has full service history and bills and the cambelt was last changed approximately 3000 miles ago". Riding on correct type alloy wheels, this tempting 928 is currently registered on the Isle of Man but will be supplied to a new owner with an export certificate (though, there is no duty to pay if it is imported into the UK).
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is presently registered in the Isle of Man. The vendor will supply the buyer with an export certificate after the sale to enable the vehicle registration.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
