  • Manufactured on 18th May 1966 at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan plant and originally finished in Candy Apple Red
  • Period Ford air-conditioning unit and Custom Autosound stereo which mimics the appearance of the factory unit
  • Pony interior with embossed seats, full tonneau cover, 'GT' lights

Built on 18th May 1996 at Ford’s Dearborn plant as a Candy Apple Red Convertible, chassis 6F08T353200 was despatched new to the Detroit District Sales Office. Migrating to California thereafter, the four-seater had been uprated with a 302 cu in (5 litre) V8 engine and automatic transmission by the time that previous keeper, Frank Vranicar, acquired it. A professional pilot, Mr Vranicar had a lot of work carried out by Mustangs & Fast Fords OC of Santa Ana, California including a power steering overhaul and the fitment of a new front crossmember, wood rimmed steering wheel, front coil springs and rear leaf springs (2013-2015). He also had the period air-conditioning system fettled by D&S Auto Air of Costa Mesa, California. The winner of several first and second prize trophies at Orange County Mustang Club events, the Convertible entered the current ownership during 2016. Relocating to the vendor’s Florida holiday home, the Ford was entrusted to Forte’s Classic Garage Inc of St Largo for over $3,000 worth of attention to its radiator, heater box, alternator, gearbox, differential, suspension and steering in August 2018 before being imported to the UK and road registered as ‘MDX 145D’ later that same year. Sparingly used by the vendor, the Ford started readily and cruised happily at 40-50mph en route to the photography location. Boasting an Edelbrock Performer 289 inlet manifold, Holley four-barrel carburettor, ‘Pony’ interior, hood cover, Custom Autosound retro-look stereo and whitewall tyres, this former award winning Mustang soft-top is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, owner’s manual, history file and assorted trophies.

The Mustang is a pillar of American automotive history - Lee Iacocca's dream car that brought sporting dash and styling to the American baby-boom generation, at a very affordable price. Its first public showing was at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964, and it went on sale the same day. By the end of that model year an amazing 126,538 had found homes. V8-engined variants outsold straight-six equipped ones by nearly three to one. Though based on the Falcon's running gear the Mustang looked very different, as its cockpit was further back on the chassis resulting in a longer bonnet and shorter rear deck, while both roof and scuttle were lower. For the 1965 model year the 260ci (4.2-litre) V8 was replaced by the 289 one, and a 2+2 fastback joined the other two body styles. A three-speed manual transmission was standard except on the most powerful version, the 'K-code' 271bhp 289, while Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission was an option.
