  • 1930's Citroen era Truck design
  • Used by FFI (French Forces of the Interior - Free France) in WW2
  • Will require recommissioning due to lack of use

An evolution of its B2 and B10 predecessors, the B12 was introduced in October 1925. Available with a diverse choice of all-steel bodywork (made to Budd patents), its uprated, quarter-elliptic leaf sprung chassis featured worm and roller steering, rear shock absorbers and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a willing 1452cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, the B12 was quick to establish a reputation for durability and economy. In production for less than two years, surviving examples are an understandably scarce sight today.

This Citroen boasts a fascinating history that dates back to the dark days of the Nazi occupation of France during World War Two. Owned by a well-known wine producer it was converted into a pick up in order to obtain the scarce fuel supplies which the Germans allowed commercial vineyards in order to keep their occupying forces supplied with wine. Furthermore, it is understood the Citroen was illicitly used by the Resistance at times and, when the Germans finally retreated and liberation came, it was painted with Free French Independence (FFI) insignia along with a cross of Lorraine to partake in the victory celebrations. Subsequently allowed to fall into disrepair, the original owner’s son having left it outside at the vineyard for many years, it was finally acquired by a visiting Englishman in the 1980s.

The amusing tale of the purchase negotiation is recounted in an article he wrote which is present in the history file. Subsequently restored in the 1990s it was featured in a number of further magazine articles and was reputedly much in demand for film work. Now a non-runner ready for a further restoration, once completed it should be a welcome entry to car shows everywhere. Offered with old French paperwork, photographs of it at the vineyard, assorted correspondence from the 1990s, copies of ‘Old Glory’ and ‘Windscreen’ magazines (in which it features) and a Revue Technique edition covering Citroen A, BZ, B10, B12 & 5CV models from 1919 to 1926, it is quite simply a piece of living history well-deserving of preservation.
