Project code-named ‘Skipton’, the VX220 was a somewhat controversial decision within GM but was backed with a simple design brief: ‘Produce an exhilarating performance vehicle with totally uncompromised handling’.

The overall budget for design & development was extremely limited and the first major challenge was how, and where, to build it. Neither Vauxhall in Britain or Opel in Europe had the ability in any of their plants to build such a specialist car that was being proposed. In the UK, already proven Lotus had a problem. Nothing unusual, their Elise Series 1 would be unfit for sale after 2000 because of new impending safety legislation. Financially, Lotus did not have the ability to re-engineer the Elise on their own and was actively looking for a partner to share the costs. The Skipton project was the perfect match for both Lotus and Vauxhall-Opel and Lotus successfully submitted a tender to undertake the co-development, prototype construction and series production of 7000 cars over 3 years at their Hethel factory

The VX220 was based on a Series 2 Elise chassis and powered by a 145bhp Ecotec 2.2 Litre engine and was first shown in 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show, with production starting March 2001. The VX220 Turbo was launched for production the following year with a quoted 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 151mph. Fast becoming a very rare find and an ideal "track car" with a kerb weight of just 930kg, the VX220 is still highly regarded and sought after to this day.

Presented in the appealing combination of Europa Blue with contrasting tan interior, this VX220 is offered with just 63,306 miles on the odometer and 5 former keepers on the V5C document. Along with VX220 related registration ‘S222 OVX’, this particular example comes accompanied by an impressive history file including its original bookpack which contains its service book comprising 14 stamps until 62,040 miles in May 2019. Impressively, 12 of these service stamps are Vauxhall Main dealer, until 57,000 miles in 2017. Also included within the history file is a large collection of previous invoices and MOT certificates.

‘S222 OVX’ is also offered with its soft-top, as well as new headlight covers should the owner wish to fit them. The car will also be offered with an MOT for sale. The vendor rates the condition of the engine and transmission as ‘Very Good’, the bodywork, paintwork and electrical equipment as ‘Good’ and the interior trim as ‘Average’
